CIEE Food & Agriculture Unit

The Fall 2009 CIEE student group recently spent time learning and exchanging with the AAN.  Students stayed with farmers from Kudchum district and helped them sell their organic produce and foods at our Green Market in Yasothon.  They also spent a morning with the farmers’ group in Ban Dong Dip, Roi Et province – where sugarcane and cassava are starting to be grown using organic techniques.  We’ll be posting more detailed writing and profiles from the students in the coming days.  For now, here are some beautiful photographs from Ana Kostioukova:

เบนเนส เฮนส์ นักศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยน ระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยโบลเด้น กับมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นชาวอเมริกัน ได้ลงพื้นที่และทำงานร่วมกับพี่น้องเครือข่ายเกษตรกรรมทางเลือกภาคอีสานและ เกษตรธรรมชาติทมอ อำเภอปราสาท จังหวัดสุรินทร์ ร่วม 5 ปี ทำให้เขาเรียนรู้วิถีของการทำงานของเครือข่ายพี่น้องที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเกษตร ทางเลือกเเละเกษตรอินทรีย์ รวมทั้งการเรียนรู้วัฒนธรรมการผลิตเกษตรในสังคมอีสาน

การที่ เบนเนส เฮนส์ เลือกพื้นที่ของจังหวัดสุรินทร์ของเครือข่ายเกษตรธรรมชาติทมอ อำเภอปราสาท จังหวัดสุรินทร์ ทำให้เขามีคำตอบสำหรับคำถามที่อยู่ในใจเขามานานเเสนนาน เกี่ยวกับเรื่องของความยากจนและการเข้าถึงระบบอาหารที่เป็นธรรมสำหรับคนทุกคนในสังคม ทั้งจากการเห็นสังคมอเมริกันที่เขาคุ้ยเคยมาตั้งแต่เด็กเ เละสังคมที่ยากจนคนชั้นล่างในตอนที่เป็นอาสาสมัครในพื้นที่ปัญหาต่างๆ ทั้งในอเมริกาเเละทั่วโลก

เครือข่ายเกษตรกรรมทางเลือกภาคอีสาน

ภาคอีสานเป็นภูมิภาคสุดท้ายของประเทศที่ถูกผนวกเข้าร่วมกับเศรษฐกิจของรัฐชาติไทยชุมชนชาวอีสานเป็นชาวไร่ชาวนา มีวิถีชีวิตและกินอยู่อย่างเรียบง่าย อิงอาศัยฐานทรัพยากรธรรมชาติอย่างลึกซึ้ง ผลจากการพัฒนาในช่วง 50 ปีที่ผ่านมา ได้ส่งผลกระทบต่อสังคมชุมชนภาคอีสานอย่างกว้างขวาง แบบแผนการใช้ชีวิตและการบริโภคของผู้คนเปลี่ยนแปลงไป ดิ้นรนกับการหาเงินหารายได้ ละทิ้งการผลิตที่หลากหลายเพื่อเลี้ยงชีพ มีการพึ่งพาอาหารจากระบบตลาดมากขึ้นจนรถเร่ขายอาหาร (รถพุ่มพวง) เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของอาหารในชุมชน ลูกหลานรุ่นใหม่ไม่สามารถจะกินอยู่ตามแบบอย่างรุ่นพ่อรุ่นแม่ได้ ทักษะและความพยายามในการเก็บหาอาหารจากธรรมชาติลดลง มีการดำรงชีพผ่านเงินตรามากขึ้น อย่างไรก็ตามขณะที่จำนวนเกษตรกรทั้งประเทศลดลงเหลือน้อยกว่า 40% จากประชากร 66.8 ล้านคน ภาคอีสานยังมีสัดส่วนสูงสุด คือ 47% ของประชากรที่อยู่ในภาคเกษตร ภาคเหนือมี 23% ภาคกลางและภาคใต้ภาคละ 15% ครัวเรือนเกษตรกรในภาคอีสานสามารถเก็บหาอาหารได้จากพื้นที่การผลิตของตนเองได้เพียง 33% (สำนักงานเศรษฐกิจการเกษตร) หากจะกล่าวถึงมูลเหตุสำคัญที่เป็นภัยคุกคามภาวะความมั่นคงอาหารของชาวอีสาน ได้ดังนี้ คือ

Green Revolution, Political Ecology and Health Care Reform

Some interesting perspectives from the food and agriculture movement: from the source of current problems to different approaches to solving them.  Thailand is somewhere between Mexico and the United States with regard to the impacts of free trade and the current health crisis.  Later this week we’ll be presenting the AAN’s current effort regarding the right to health care and health insurance with the National Health Security Office, ThaiHealth and the Foundation for Consumers.

“…Borlaug’s main intent was to “help poor farmers,” Mexico’s smallholders have been in a state of severe crisis for more than a generation. The so-called “immigrant crisis” here in the United States is better viewed as an agrarian crisis in Mexico. Since the the advent of NAFTA alone, more than 1.5 million Mexican farmers have been forced off of their land. Since the Mexican manufacturing economy has been nowhere near robust enough to absorb them, a huge portion of one-time Mexican farmers now wash our dishes and harvest our crops.”

This story is part of the Alternative Agriculture Network’s Food Ways Research Project, which critically looks at where the foods and ingredients we commonly eat come from and how they are produced.  With this research, we hope to propose and develop local alternatives for a more sustainable food system.

To the Coalition of Immokalee Workers on the eve of your annual encuentro,

The Alternative Agriculture Network – Esan (AAN) is a network of small-scale farmers in northeastern Thailand, made up of more than 3,000 families.  We are a movement of farmers, activists, NGOs and organizers.  We’ve come together to support independent careers, self-reliance, creating power and control over production inputs, and access to resources.  We work together on preserving and expanding local seeds for use in alternative agriculture.  We create spaces in the market to promote safe food for urban consumers.  We monitor agriculture and trade policies and push for policies that represent our interests.  We resist and struggle against policies that are obstacles in the development of family and community self-reliance (for example, GMO technology and corporate-controlled contract farming systems).

กรณีศึกษาการปลูกมันสำปะหลังในนาข้าว

นายวีระ ไวว่อง  อายุ 40 ปี ชาวนาบ้านศรีฐาน  ตำบลศรีฐาน อำเภอป่าติ้ว จังหวัดยโสธร  นายวีระและครอบครัวตัดสินใจปลูกมันสำปะหลังในนาข้าวใกล้บ้านบนพื้นที่ 4 ไร่ หลังจากเก็บเกี่ยวข้าวในช่วงเดือนธันวาคม 2550 ที่ผ่านมาโดยได้รับคำแนะนำและชักชวนจากญาติว่ามีมันสำปะหลังอายุสั้น 6 เดือนให้ผลผลิตปลูกในนาข้าวได้ และญาติก็นำต้นพันธุ์มาขายให้  เขาซื้อต้นพันธุ์ 2,000 บาท (ต้นละ 2 บาท) มีการไถพรวน 2 รอบ โดยเขาลงมือไถเอง หลังจากนั้นปลูกมันฯ

มหกรรมสมุนไพรแห่งชาติครั้งที่6 ในปีนี้มาในประเด็น “สมุนไพร ผักพื้นบ้าน ฟื้นฟูวิกฤตเศรษฐกิจ” แถมพ่วงด้วยประเด็นมาแรง พืชและสมุนไพรพื้นบ้านต้านหวัด 2009 ซึ่งงานนี้คนเมืองพลาดไม่ได้แน่ เพราะมีกิจกรรมต่างๆให้เที่ยวชมมากมาย ทั้งองค์ความรู้ด้านผัก ข้าวและสมุนไพรพื้นบ้าน ที่ส่งผลต่อความหลากหลายของการรักษาฐานทรัพยากร และการพึ่งตนเองของคนเมือง รวมถึงทางออกในการพึ่งตนเองต่อวิกฤตเศรษฐกิจที่เกิดขึ้น โดยเฉพาะการเรียนรู้เรื่องการปลูกผักกินเองของคนในเมืองที่สามารถทำได้ง่ายๆ ด้วยตัวคุณเอง
